Thomas Johnson was born on May 28, 1775 in the colony of Virginia. His parents were William Johnson and Hannah Sanderson from Lancashire, England.

Thomas was one of the earliest settlers in southern Knox County, along with Frederick Mehl, George Catt, Anthony Cary and many others. He arrived in the area around 1800 and married George Catt’s daughter Catherine. They cleared the land and took to farming as they grew their family as well as their farm. The children born to this marriage were Eleanor, Susan, Harriet, Payton, Fielding, Docia, Jane and Thomas Jr.

As did many of the early settlers of the area, Thomas fought under Captains Perry, Modrell, and Beckes during the War of 1812. Thomas was active in local politics, aligning himself with the Democratic Party of the time. As one of the most prominent residents and farmers of the area, the township, which is situated in the south central part of the county, was named after him. His family, especially the younger Thomas, went on to amass extensive land holdings throughout the 1800s.

Thomas and Catherine lived out their years on the family farm. Catherine passed away on August 15, 1862 and Thomas followed her a few months later on January 19, 1863. They were laid to rest in the Johnson Cemetery which still exists today, not far from the White River on Johnson Bend Road.

Thomas Johnson was my 5th great grandfather on my mom’s side.

Hulbert John Bailey was born on April 27, 1911 in Olive Hill, Carter County, Kentucky, the son of John H Bailey and Ona Florence Johnson.  He had two brothers (Ronald and John A.) and four sisters (Arcie, Geraldine, Clara and Wanda).  He was raised in Olive Hill, but lived for a short time in the Cleveland area with his sister Arcie and her husband Frank Behling.  He worked in construction.

Around 1931, Hulbert returned to Kentucky where he married Mabel Burchett.  Together they had a daughter, Florence Elizabeth who went by “Betty”.  The marriage, however, did not last long and Hulbert found himself back in northern Ohio by 1935 working as a painter. On November 16, 1935, he married Joan N. Hallam in Ashtabula County, Ohio.  This marriage, too, was short lived.  It is believed that Hulbert died in late 1936, although substantiating documentation has not yet been located confirming this.  Joan did remarry in 1939 and the marriage license does indicate she was a widow at that time.

His daughter Betty was raised by John and Florence and she lived to be nearly 80 years old.

Hulbert John Bailey was my 4th cousin 3x removed on my dad’s side.

A Double Tragedy

On Sunday, July 6, 1930, the Johnson family of southern Knox County suffered a double tragedy when they lost two of their menfolk.  Prominent Johnson Township farmer Clark Johnson, 79, passed away at home, the result of a stroke.  It was his second and it had been reported that he had been in ill health for some time prior to his death.  Clark was born February 29, 1852 in Knox County, the third of four sons to Thomas and Catherine (Lane) Johnson.  Clark also had several half-brothers and sisters, most of which had resided in the area.  He married Louisa Bailey on December 31, 1876 in Knox County and she survived him.  Together they had 8 children, 5 of which who were still living, and numerous grandchildren.

Also losing his life on that day was Clark’s grandson, Lawrence Tewalt.  The 20 year old apparently was at the family farm keeping vigil at his grandfather’s bedside, after possibly partaking in festivities over the Fourth of July holiday.  At some point he decided to get some relief from the July heat and went for a swim in the nearby White River with his younger brother and several cousins.  He became fatigued and went under, not resurfacing.  It took several hours for the neighbors to recover the body.  He was born in 1909 to William and Bessie (Johnson) Tewalt in Knox County.  He married his young widow Elsie Dunning in 1929.  They were residing in Terre Haute where Lawrence worked in a glass factory.  He also left behind a brother, Donald, and two sisters, Evelyn and Julie.

Services for both men were held on July 8th at the Decker Methodist Church.  Clark was interred at Greenlawn Cemetery while Lawrence was laid to rest in Fairview Cemetery.

Note: Clark Johnson was a first cousin of my third great grandmother, Sarah Roderick Thompson.
